Epilepsy Awareness Month 2022
November is Epilepsy Awareness Month and raising awareness is what this blog is all about.
I started this blog to have a place to get out my thoughts/feelings about epilepsy, to raise awareness, to battle stigmas, and to build a community that helps each other through the many ups and downs of this journey.
As we've discussed before epilepsy is a neurological disorder caused by unusual nerve cell activity in the brain and is the fourth most common neurological disease after migraines, stroke, and Alzheimer’s.
It is estimated that about 3.4 million people in the US have epilepsy and more than 65 million people globally are affected.
Epilepsy can begin at any age and about 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy at some point during their lifetime.
These are just a few facts about epilepsy but there is so much more to learn and discuss. This month is a great opportunity to educate not only yourself but to help spread awareness to others. If you see a graphic about epilepsy awareness on one of your social media sites this month please take the time to not only like it but share it as well.
If there is one thing I hope people learn this month it is seizure first aid. Please take a few minutes to read this post about the importance of learning first aid for seizures. Even if you don't know or have never seen a person have a seizure, you never know when it could happen and knowing what to do and what not to do could save a life.
I hope that you will join me this month in learning about epilepsy and also spreading awareness.
As always thanks for reading!
